• Cooking Up Holiday Traditions
The year is filled with events that grab children's attention--birthdays with decorated cakes, parties and presents, and Valentines Day with its cards and sweets. Independence Day has fireworks, and Halloween and Purim mean dressing up in costumes. In contrast, with no presents, costumes or fireworks, Thanksgiving doesn't seem to hold as much interest for kids. They know they'll have a few days away from school and perhaps a turkey dinner with family and friends, but what else is there to fire their engines? They are often sent off to entertain themselves while the adults prepare the meal and the table.

• Back-to-School Blackboard Cookies
The writing is on the wall: school is cool! And so is the parent who sends words to the wise (or just friendly messages) on these fun Blackboard Cookies. They're perfect for lunches and after-school treats -- or in case a little bribery is needed to get that homework assignment done.

• Munch and Crunch!
Nope, that's not the sound of autumn leaves. It's a snacker's delight. Mmmm! - Microwave Caramel Corn and Nutty Bear Crunch snack mix. So simple you will want to make both while you're in the kitchen. The S. family said they made both treats following school one afternoon. "The cleanup was certainly easy, which I liked," said Beth S. "It was a fun way to spend a rainy afternoon."

• Please DO Eat the Daisies!
After falling out of favor for many years, cooking and garnishing with flowers is back in vogue once again. Today, gourmet restaurants from coast to coast are featuring such dishes as Quiche and Pansies, Dandelion Omelet, Carnation Cherries Jubilee, Marigold Mincemeat Pie, Violet Pineapple Parfait, and Lavender Apple Crisp to name just a few. But you don't have to be a high-end gourmet to wow friends and family with some dishes that rely on flower power.

• Fruit Soups for Breakfast!
If your heirs apparent are a bit indifferent to regular breakfast fare, why not entice them with something totally different? A bowl or cup of chilled fruit soup.

• Outdoor Grill and Open-Fire Recipes
Don't let summer end without taking advantage of the chance to eat -- and, better yet -- cook outside. In addition to starting a seasonal family tradition, cooking outside is a great way to get kids interested in food. As one mom of three points out, "Even my pickiest eaters eat with gusto if it's something they've cooked over an open fire. It brings out the pioneer in any kid!"

• Patriotic Slushies
This 4th of July, beat the heat with a frosty red, white, and blue drink that's as much fun to make as it is to slurp. Made with fruit, these patriotic slushies are tasty and nutritious. Kids mash up the fresh or frozen strawberries, blueberries, pears and bananas and as one mom from Ohio pointed out, "It's another fruit serving in one day."

• Strawberry Lemonade--A Fruity Hit Any Way You Slice It
Nothing says summer like a tall, cool glass of lemonade. And everyone knows how disappointing the store-bought drinks, powders, and concentrates can be. Wouldn't it be great if you could make delicious, homemade lemonade, with a strawberry twist, or as Anne P. suggests, " We actually made two batches, one with fresh raspberries." Grab the whole family, head to the farmer's market, and get ready to enjoy the tangy-sweet flavor of homemade strawberry (or raspberry or peach or . . . ) lemonade. Alison, mother of two, found, " The kids had a blast going to the grocery store on a special mission to get the goods."

• Baking and Making an Edible Teacup
You say "teacup cake," I say "tea cupcake." By either name, it's a creative and charming presentation of that old favorite, the cupcake. Surprise your friends with a tastier rendition of the tea party -- scrumptious cupcakes decorated as teacups and teapots filled with chilled milk.

• Critter Cookies
Celebrate all that spring has to offer, right down to the tiny crawlers and flyers. An array of ladybug, butterfly, and long wiggly caterpillar cookies can be a festive substitute for a party cake -- and a great group activity. Adults can start and end the process by slicing and baking, while the kids can take their time decorating. And just like the critters, the cookies will be gone before you know it.

• Tomato on Sally Lunn Bread--The Messiest Sandwich On Earth
Let's make Sally Lunn bread and then turn it into a memorable sandwich dripping with juice from fresh tomatoes! As the story goes, a young girl in eighteenth century Bath, England, sold buns that were dark on top and light underneath, likened to the sun and moon (Sel et Lune). Keep saying it fast and you'll get "Sally Lunn."

• Peachy Keen Crisp
Call it a crisp or call it a crumble, it's one of the best food ideas to ever have come out of merry old England. It is simple to prepare, involves enough steps to keep children interested, and uses no choppers or blenders. In the words of a central New York mom, "It was easy to cook and clean up, too." Lynda Hannan of Cincinnati reported, "This was great served slightly warm, and I have to say it was mighty tasty cold from the fridge the next morning. . . . Enough of these evil desserts!! This one was totally delicious-- I just scraped the last bit out of the pan and it did a fast vanishing act!"

• The Ice Cream Sandwich
The Ice Cream Sandwich, a variation of the Earl of Sandwich's namesake, can be a two-stage affair, either eaten immediately or frozen for snacks later. The cookies are an easy mixing job, although with younger the children the less simple it is. Ice cream scooping may be a great way to get the older siblings to show their dexterity and strength, while the younger ones can place the ice cream scoops and wrap the sandwiches."These ice cream sandwiches that we made are the best," exclaimed the Krabacher kids. The Hannans echoed their sentiments: "What a great cookie recipe!!! It was tough saving enough cookies to make the ice cream sandwiches!!!"

• Pumpkin Ice Cream
If you associate pumpkins only with Halloween and Thanksgiving, think again. Fresh pumpkin is available throughout the winter and its use extends beyond the jack-o-lantern, seeds and pie filling. In spirit of its cold weather harvesting, whip up pumpkin ice cream.
